I have about 20GB of music on there (mass memory) and I find the music player app rather sluggish - it has to think for a second or two when I select an album, before the list of tracks on the album shows. This is a bit annoying if you're searching around for stuff.

If the device is supplied with 32GB of memory it's not that impressive that it struggles with it being 2/3 full, is it?

It's a bit better since I upgraded to V20 but still not great.

I keep music on a memory card and movies in mass memory. Works fine.
This was the point i made before about how the SD card seems to perform faster than the Mass memory. I think its just a  poor initial access speed compared to the SD card's however once it gets going it whoops the SD card. It's likely since many SDcards use a technique called Bursting to accelerate their response to a request. Bursting  is just Like using Nitrous Oxide in drag racing. It will only let a 4 banger  Hyundai  go fast for a moment where as a heavier naturally aspirated V12 will quickly catch up a whoop it.  Thing is, In the world of Handheld computers we don't necessarily need sustained High speed data transfers until we get home and transfer large files to and from our devices.  which was never really an issue till now.

 My advice is; if this is really bugging you, transfer your music to a good SDHC class 2, 4  or 6 SD card that supports bursting.  You can even try a class  8 but nobody can promise performance gains above class 6. It's even possible it will degrade performance or won't work altogether. "Hell" It's also possible this is a driver issue or something totally unrelated. Whatever the case, It's my best guess.   Undecided

Hmm. I suppose I had assumed that the slowness was down to processing time rather than the speed at which data needs to be read off the card. Not that I know much about these things.

Is it possible to put a 32GB SD card in the N97? Officially I think the max size is 16.

It's possible but it depends on if it conforms to SD2.0 spec which according to this it does.
scroll down to Interfaces/Expansion:Interfaces and take a look.

For now all we can do is be patient and optimistic.
however If you are impatient and  want something now

I recommend

Sandisk Mobile Ultra 8GB MicroSDHC Class 6
Transcend 8GB class 6. (good bursting performance)
Sandisk 16GB Ultra microSDHC CLASS 4 (expensive but a good choice)

there are others but i need time to look them up.

* Class 2: 2 MB/s
* Class 4: 4 MB/s
* Class 6: 6 MB/s
* Class 8: 8 MB/s

 Whatever you buy make sure you test it good by copying files to & from it  before you buy it.

I gave up with the standard Nokia music player recently and moved to this one http://www.mlauncher.org/ instead.  No lag or anything, and I've got around 15GB or music on my phone's mass memory Grin.

What OS you are using at the moment? i guess it's nothing wrong with the memory card.. it's OS problem. Have you tried a hard reset?
